Teaching

Dr. Petersen has been teaching piano for over 10 years. She has held positions at the McGill Conservatory of Music, Schulich School of Music of McGill University, Merit School of Music, and she currently teaches at the Music Institute of Chicago and privately in the Chicagoland area. Her students have gone on to hold successful careers in music, release CDs of original piano music, win top awards in local competitions, and receive high scores in state exams. She is currently a member of MTNA, ISMTA, and is a Steinway Educational Partner.

Dr. Petersen's specialties as a teacher include:

  • Preparing students for the AIM (Achiement in Music) exams. For more info on AIM click here

  • Preparing students for auditions and competitions

  • Technique and Keyboard theory

  • Chamber Music

  • Starting young students

  • Helping intermediate students advance

  • In person and digital teaching

Dr. Petersen's teaching is focused on helping the student develop their own relationship with the piano: each person has a different hand, body, and mind and therefore "one size fits all" teaching cannot apply. It is important to Dr. Petersen that her students feel comfortable expressing themselves at the instrument, and that above all else, they are always making music.

If you are interested in lessons, please get in touch with me below! It is recommended to setup a trial lesson to see if we would be a good student-teacher "fit."
